Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does Blackink do?

Blackink is a founder-led brand strategy and identity agency founded in 2006, operating between Beirut and Montreal and working with founders and business leaders across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America.

We specialize in two things: brand strategy and identity design. That means we help businesses define what they stand for, who they are for, and how they should be perceived, then translate that into a visual and verbal identity that holds up consistently across markets and touchpoints.

We are not a marketing or advertising agency. We focus on the upstream work: the strategic clarity and identity system that gives everything downstream, your website, your communications, your sales pitch, a stronger foundation to build on.

2. Are you a marketing or advertising agency?

No.

Blackink focuses on the work that comes before marketing and advertising: positioning, brand strategy, messaging and identity.

We build the foundation that gives marketing, digital, communications and sales teams a clearer direction to work from.

3. Who is behind Blackink?

Blackink is led by Riad Mouawad, a brand strategist and identity designer with over 20 years of experience building brands across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America.

Riad is a Level C Certified Brand Strategist, trained and certified by world-renowned branding expert Marty Neumeier, and a graduate of The Futur's Business Bootcamp led by Chris Do.

Every engagement is founder-led from brief to delivery. You work directly with Riad. No juniors or handoffs.

4. What does your branding process look like?

We work through four stages, each one built on the last.

Ambition. We start by understanding what the business is trying to achieve: the market, audience, competitive reality and ambition.

Bet. We define the position worth committing to: what the brand should stand for, who it matters to and why the right audience should prefer it.

Signals. We determine what people need to notice, understand and perceive for that position to work. This informs the message, language, identity and other customer-facing signals.

Asset. We build the brand system that makes those decisions visible and usable, from positioning and messaging to verbal and visual identity, guidelines and relevant applications.

5. What deliverables will I receive?

Depending on scope, you may receive:

  • Brand strategy blueprint

  • Brand story and messaging

  • Naming and verbal identity guide

  • Logo and visual identity system

  • Typography, color, and design elements

  • Brand book and application guidelines

  • Creative direction for packaging, digital, and more (as scoped)

Everything we create is tailored and built from scratch, never templated.

6. How long does a typical project take?

A focused strategy and identity engagement typically runs 6 to 12 weeks. More complex work, involving naming, brand architecture, or multi-market considerations, tends to run 12 to 20 weeks.

Timelines are shaped as much by decision quality as by scope. Founders who engage actively and make clear calls move faster. We set expectations at the proposal stage and hold to them.

7. Can you just do the logo or naming without the strategy?

We do not take logo-only briefs.

Every identity needs a clear strategic foundation. If you already have a well-defined position and need the identity built around it, we can pressure-test that foundation first and focus the engagement on identity.

Naming can also be commissioned as a standalone engagement, but it still begins with enough strategic context to understand what the name needs to communicate, where it needs to work and what it needs to support.

We do not treat either naming or identity as isolated creative exercises.

8. Who do you work with?

We work with founders and business leaders at meaningful points of change: launching something new, repositioning an established business, or preparing a brand for growth across new markets.

Our experience spans F&B and hospitality, professional services, consumer goods, real estate, healthcare and NGOs.

Blackink operates between Beirut and Montreal and works with clients across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America. Much of our work involves brands that need to stay clear and consistent across different markets, languages and cultural contexts, including English, French and Arabic.

The engagement changes depending on the business. The strategic discipline behind it does not.

9. Can we work together remotely?

Yes.

Blackink operates between Beirut and Montreal and works remotely with clients across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America.

Most engagements can be handled entirely online, with direct access to Riad throughout the process.

10. How much does a branding project cost?

Our fees depend on the ambition, complexity and scope of the engagement.

Brand identity engagements built on an established strategic foundation start from $6,500.

Full brand strategy and identity engagements start from $15,000.

More complex multi-market, multilingual or multi-brand systems are quoted individually.

The right starting point depends on what the business actually needs, which is what the Clarity Call helps determine.

11. Why do we need brand strategy? Can't we just go straight to design?

Markets don't always reward the best. They reward what is understood, trusted and chosen.

Brand strategy is the work of deciding what the business should mean in the market, who it is for and why it should be preferred before design amplifies those decisions.

Design without that clarity can still look good. It simply has no clear strategic job to do.

13. What is brand strategy?

Brand strategy is the deliberate set of decisions that define how a business will be positioned, perceived and chosen in its market.

It answers three fundamental questions: who is this brand for, what should it stand for and why should someone prefer it over the alternatives?

At Blackink, those decisions come before identity and design. They give everything that follows a clear strategic role.

14. What is the difference between branding and marketing?

Branding defines what a business stands for, how it should be perceived and why someone should choose it.

Marketing takes that position to market through channels, campaigns, content and communication.

Branding provides the foundation. Marketing creates visibility around it.

Blackink focuses on the branding side: strategy, positioning, messaging and identity.

Let’s clarify what your brand needs next.
