Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does Blackink do?

Blackink is a strategy-first brand and identity consultancy founded in 2006, headquartered in Lebanon with a physical presence in Canada, working with founders and business leaders across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America.

We specialize in two things: brand strategy and identity design. That means we help businesses define what they stand for, who they are for, and how they should be perceived, then translate that into a visual and verbal identity that holds up consistently across markets and touchpoints.

We are not a marketing or advertising agency. We focus on the upstream work: the strategic clarity and identity system that gives everything downstream, your website, your communications, your sales pitch, a stronger foundation to build on.

2. Are you a marketing or advertising agency?

No. And that distinction matters.

Marketing amplifies. Branding defines what gets amplified. We work on what comes first: the positioning, the strategic clarity, and the identity that your marketing will later build on.

Without that foundation, marketing spend moves faster in the wrong direction. Everything we produce, strategy, identity, guidelines, is designed to align and amplify what follows, even when that work is handled by others.

3. Who is behind Blackink?

Blackink is led by Riad Mouawad, a brand strategist and identity designer with over 25 years of experience building brands across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America.

Riad is a Level C Certified Brand Strategist, trained and certified by world-renowned branding expert Marty Neumeier, and a graduate of The Futur's Business Bootcamp led by Chris Do.

Every engagement is founder-led from brief to delivery. You work directly with Riad. No juniors. No handoffs.

4. What does your branding process look like?

We work through four stages, each one built on the last.

Ambition. We start by understanding the game you want to play: your market, your audience, your competitive reality, and where you want to be in five years.

Bet. We define the strategic position you're willing to own. This requires focus and trade-offs, but it's where your competitive advantage is built.

Signals. We translate the strategy into a coherent identity: naming, messaging, tone of voice, visual language, and guidelines that all reinforce the same perception.

Asset. The final deliverable isn't just a brand book. It's a strategic asset your business can grow into. One that compounds over time.

5. What deliverables will I receive?

Depending on scope, you may receive:

  • Brand strategy blueprint

  • Brand story and messaging

  • Naming and verbal identity guide

  • Logo and visual identity system

  • Typography, color, and design elements

  • Brand book and application guidelines

  • Creative direction for packaging, digital, and more (as scoped)

Everything we create is tailored and built from scratch, never templated.

6. How long does a typical project take?

A focused strategy and identity engagement typically runs 6 to 12 weeks. More complex work, involving naming, brand architecture, or multi-market considerations, tends to run 12 to 20 weeks.

Timelines are shaped as much by decision quality as by scope. Founders who engage actively and make clear calls move faster. We set expectations at the proposal stage and hold to them.

7. Can you just do the logo or naming without the strategy?

We do not take logo-only or naming-only briefs.

A logo without strategic clarity may look polished, but it rarely creates meaningful differentiation. It looks like something. It does not mean anything.

Every identity we create is the output of a strategic decision: what does this brand stand for, who is it for, how should it be perceived? If you already have a clear, well-articulated strategy and need identity execution, that is worth a conversation. If the strategy is still vague or assumed, we will always recommend resolving it first.

8. Who do you work with?

We work with founders and business leaders at real inflection points: launching something new, repositioning an existing business, or preparing a brand to operate across new markets.

We are industry-agnostic. We have built brands across F&B and hospitality, professional services, consumer goods, real estate and destination, healthcare, and NGOs. Pattern recognition across categories sharpens judgment within any single one.

Blackink is headquartered in Lebanon with a physical presence in Canada. From there, we operate globally, with clients across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America. Much of our work involves brands that need to hold up across more than one market, language, or cultural context, in English, French, and Arabic. That cross-cultural judgment is something Blackink is specifically built for.

We work with founders building from scratch and with established businesses whose brand has fallen behind where the business has grown. The engagement looks different in each case. The discipline behind it is the same.

9. Can we work together remotely?

Yes. Most of our clients are remote. We have built brands for businesses across three continents without a single in-person meeting.

10. How much does a branding project cost?

Our fees depend on the ambition, complexity, and scope of the engagement.

As a general orientation: a standalone brand strategy engagement starts at $5,000. Full strategy and identity engagements typically range from $10,000 to $25,000+ for most businesses. Larger or more complex projects, involving naming, brand architecture, or multi-market scope, can range higher.

We structure work in clear tiers so you know exactly what you're getting and why. If budget is a concern, the best first step is a Clarity Call. We'll be direct about what makes sense for your situation.

11. Why do we need brand strategy? Can't we just go straight to design?

Markets don't always reward the best, the most talented, or the most innovative. They reward what is understood, trusted, and remembered.

Strategy is the work of making sure your business earns all three. Design without it may look compelling in isolation. It rarely creates the clarity that makes a market choose you, or the consistency that makes them remember you.

Most businesses that skip strategy end up rebuilding within three years. The ones that invest in it early move with more conviction and spend less correcting course later.

12. What's the first step?

A short conversation.

We offer a free 20-minute Clarity Call. A direct conversation about where your business stands, what the brand needs to do, and whether the work makes sense right now. You will leave with a clear point of view, whether we work together or not.

Not ready for a call yet? Start with our free 5-minute Brand Readiness Assessment. It will show you exactly where your brand foundation stands and what to focus on before you invest in anything else.

13. What is brand strategy?

Brand strategy is the deliberate set of decisions that define how a business will be positioned, perceived, and chosen in its market. It answers three questions: who is this brand for, what does it stand for, and why would someone choose it over the alternatives.

At Blackink, brand strategy is always the starting point. Clarity on those decisions is what makes everything that follows, the identity, the messaging, the design, coherent and defensible.

Markets do not reward the best. They reward what is understood, trusted, and remembered. Brand strategy is the work of making sure your business earns all three.

14. What is the difference between branding and marketing?

Branding defines what a business stands for, how it should be perceived, and why someone would choose it. Marketing amplifies that message to the right audience at the right time.

One comes before the other. Branding is the foundation. Marketing is the acceleration. Without a clear brand, marketing spend moves faster in the wrong direction.

At Blackink, we focus entirely on the branding side: the strategy, the positioning, the identity. That foundation is what makes everything your marketing team does more effective.
